bimsection destination file

Is it somehow possible to direct more precisely where my generated sections end up? By choosing the destination file for the section entity I can change the file, but it always uses the default layout (A1?) and generates a separate sheetset file. I usually have a main model, from which I xref the part I want to layout and then add sections to this "sheet model" file with my xref. This way my main drawing doesnt get flooded with section entities, which I sometimes find a bit tedious to navigate. Then I generate the sections and annotate them as needed. My problem is, that I would like to collect all of these sheets in a central project sheetset. Right now they all end up in individual sheetsets, which I have to delete and then manually add the file to my project sheetset. Is there any way to direct sections automatically to become associated with a certain sheetset and to end up on a specific layout in the target file (e.g. like you can relink a sheet in a sheetset, choosing source file and layout)?

What workflow do You use? Is there any guideline/best practice on how to handle sheets and sheetsets (because i didnt really find any)? I attached a sketch to illustrate what i explained above...

  • Sounds like the Bentley system

  • I've never worked with Microstation, except for playing around with the generative components. I just tried to make the (for me) most intuitive use of the sheetset system. I don't really care how many files i generate, as i can access all sheets through the manager. It would be nice though not to have to reassociate everything by hand.

I wonder how other people here work..
  • Not much need or experience of 2D Plans for me,
but your workflow sounds very reasonable for me.
    BTW
    Beautifully illustrated !

No matter if the initial Modell is the file for 2D output
or just referenced into a container file,
I think everything you mentioned behind that file is a must.
    No ?

  • Hi Lukas
The BIM workflow for generating documentation drawings (plans, sections, elevations, details) is as follows.
In the 3D model BIM sections are created each of which create a sheet view in a layout of the target drawing. If the target drawing is not specified, the section name is used. The project sheet set contains all sheets in the destination drawings. The project sheet set is created according to the BIM / Sheet Set Template Metric or BIM / Sheet Set Template Imperial user preference (Open the Settings dialog to edit the preferences). The Sheet Creation / Sheet Template Layout defines the template drawing and the default layout in this drawing for the documentation drawings.

You can use PROJECTNAME to define the name of sheetset to use. See Generating Drawings in HELP. If this isn't set, then BricsCAD uses the current drawing name as the sheetset name.

Using PROJECTNAME will also allow you to connect multiple model files to the same sheetset.

  • Thanks Jason,

the PROJECTNAME system variable was the detail i was missing.
