OS X V15 vs V16

 Hi Forum,

is there a reason to update from V15 to V16? Which bugs in V15 are fixed in V16? For example to get the cross hairs endless etc...
Is a comparison list between this 2 version available?

Regards Uli

  •  In my opinion there's no groundbreaking changes - still printing pdf is shit.
  • Simply have a look at ReleaseNotes.html :-)
    many greetings !
  •  Currently BricsCAD is and works like Autocad,
with some improvements in some of ACADs limitations.
(Like RMB to reactivate a Tool)

But is there any hope or interest that BricsCAD will include (options for)
a more fluid mouse based workflow, like 90% of all other CAD or 3D Apps
work outside of the Autodesk world ?
I mean indeed leaving the Autodesk island path concerning workflow.

Where Tools stay active for further use until you abort or switch back to Selection.
Or that a simple click into blank screen will drop any selections and those things.
I was so much faster with Microstation, that is unfortunately not available on OS X
and even now in Vectorworks with its mass of drawbacks in workflow,
    I am still much faster.
  • The html version of the RSS feed BricsCAD (Mac) releases also contains the Release Notes (or see the "more download options" at the main download page, or locate ReleaseNotes.html inside the download).

V16.2 is still in beta (currently V16.2.04, V16.2.07 in preparation).
If you are in doubt about updating, you could wait a few weeks for the V16.2 release.

A fullscreen crosshairs implementation has been added in V16.2 beta, unfortunately it is not reliable yet and will probably not make it in the next release.
It is hard to avoid disturbance with the 3D accelerated OGL window.

About exporting to PDF. We are also making progress in that field, V16.2.07 will contain a first fix.  But there are multiple things wrong with font references.  The freetype library that we use is not fully supporting mac.  At the moment it remains necessary to enable PDFTTFTEXTASGEOMETRY and disable Plot transparencies (eg by setting PLOTTRANSPARENCYOVERRIDE to 0).

I think the new V16.2 quad is an important step in that direction.
Perhaps you can enter a support request with your suggestions?

Thanx Tijs for answers. For me it is important to hear, that Bricscad OS X develops. As I hate it to switch to windows via Parallels or Vmware I hope for a stable release.
The update from V15 to V16, means from a beta to a beta, for some 400,-€ is to expensive. Isn´t there a possibility for Mac users to take part on a beta program?

As your answer was not something like, we focus mainly on ACAD users and want to
have BRICSCAD as familiar as possible for those, which would be ok of course,
    a support request makes sense.

My trial period from the time when v15 switched to v16 ended.
Is there a way of getting another trial period to give BRICSCAD OS X another try ?

Ja! As long as the OS X is beta, there should be a beta testing program offered from Bricscad. And.... The beta testers should take advantage for there efforts supporting the development of OS X version.

  • FWIW, I've been using Bricscad for OSX beta 16.2.04 in a production environment since its release several weeks ago, and I find that while the app still crashes unexpectedly more than I would like, 2 or 3 times per day, that it is quite usable and manageable. While not perfectly acceptable, it's stability is far better than the prior v16 public (non beta) release in terms of stability. I use time machine with two separate backups always, save often, set my auto save parameters to 20 minutes, and have developed a stable user settings environment without compromising my goals. I also quit the app and reassert a few times per day to ensure that any settings changes I have made "stick". I haven't lost data yet. I have never had to recover a file from an archive because of a crash, only if I needed to regress a file due to my own errors.

  • >Is there a way of getting another trial period to give BRICSCAD OS X another try ?
Extended trials and beta access are to be requested by support request.  This simple requirement makes the basic assertion that you have an account on our website, and you know how to enter a support request, so two way communication in our support request system is possible.

Granting beta access and trial prolongation is decided case-by-case.  In practice it is nearly always granted (but not unlimited).
These cases seem very legitimate indeed
    - to try the new V16.2 quad and give feedback about it
    - to have a look at V16.2 to consider upgrading from V15

Any major version comes with a free 30 day trial for any user.  For the first beta of a new major version, V16.1 something, a platform-specific shared license key for all beta testers is usually provided.  If your trial is already expired and you want to re-evaluate in the middle of a major version (V16.2, V16.3), you need to ask a new trial.  Licenses for beta testing are always limited in time (with gaps between the time intervals) - else it would not be fair for paying customers.

    >The beta testers should take advantage for there efforts supporting the development of OS X version.
There is clear advantage to beta testing in both directions.  We can use your feedback to make the product better.  You can focus on your issues and ignore everything you don't use.  And we can focus on features that block actual users.  Without user feedback, we risk spending time on a feature that happens to be hardly used on Mac.  Since BricsCAD is a quite large product with a far larger user base on windows compared to mac/linux that is a real risk.

    Kind Regards

  •  Thanks for the detailed explanation Tijs.

I sent a support request about providing another trial period.
