"Database conversion:" while reloading XREFs?

I use clipped XREFs a lot, and have found that when reloading them into a drawing it takes a while. A message appears at the bottom of the screen that says "Database conversion:" and it sits there a while until the XREFs all reload.

Just wondering if there is a way to speed this up. Does the database (whatever that is) always get converted, or is there some setting that I have that is forcing an unnecessary step? I have tried changing ISAVEPERCENT but that has no effect.
