Filtering layers by name
Hi!
I have recently upgraded from v20 to v26 and there is one thing that I really don't like in newer versions.
That is name filter in layers panel!
In v20, field for typing layer name was open by default and one would easily start to type name for layer filtering. When you need to change filter, clicking "x" would just delete typed words while enabling immediate re-typing of another word.
In v26, field for typing is hidden so one needs to click magnifying glass in order to type. Then, in order to change the word, if one clicks "x" the field gets hidden again, so click the magnifying glass again, then type.
Is there a setting that could return good, old layer name filter behaviour?

Hello.
There is no setting to revert to the old behavior.
The interface has been significantly changed since V20.An approach could be to create a support request related to this topic.
In the meantime, you could experiment with leaving the search box activated, meaning not using the X button.
Instead, to replace the search text, you could double-click on the existing text or use CTRL+A to select it all.
Then, when typing in, the new text will replace the old one.1 -
Thanks for the answer.
I am doing what you suggested, but it doesn't work good. Sometimes, maybe while switching panels from Layers to Properties or Xrefs and back, text stays typed but filter doesn't work as all layers are shown. Clicking on the field and hitting Enter doesn't work but it needs to be typed manually. I manage but it's quite annoying.
Interestingly enough, good old Layer name field is right there, present in the Layer explorer window!
I'll definitely file a support request, as soon as I figure how and where.

Bonjour @martinb
I am not sure to understand perfectly, I am only a French person who tries to speak English.
To do what you are asking, I suggest you go into the layer explorer, see image. When my new filter is created, I add a line with "new*" as property, and thanks to that when I create a new layer with my active filter, temporarily the "new layer" appears and I can modify the name.
I hope to be in the spirit of the question.

Thanks ALANH, request submitted.

Thank you for your suggestion, but it wasn't the problem. The problem was that in v20 (image at the bottom), layer filter was by default on and had better / easier functionality than the layer filter in v26 (image on the top) where the field is hidden behind behind a magnifying glass and its functionality gets a bit clunky.
It gets annoying when one has to work with lots of layers as I do.
Regards!
