Need to extend Dimension line under text
Having a hard time getting an answer on this via google so I'm here. Want to be able to create a vertical dimension with text outside/above dimension line and dimension line to extend to match text length. I know it can be done simply by drawing a line but really in this day and age shouldn't this automatic somehow?

You can via lisp do what you want possibly, you can get how many characters in the dimnsion text say "ABC" = 3 then using a fudge factor say 0.4 * number characters reset the line length. Added to my to do list.
I modified a dim style got close but had to do a manual move may be able to reset text point,

You can find sample scripts hear for setting up dimension styles that behave in the manner you're looking for.
If you load one of these in your existing drawing, then you can select and compare dimstyles in the drawing explorer, which would help narrow down the setting you are looking for.

I think the variable you need to change is DIMTMOVE.

Hello,
Bricscad has a command for this.
Perhaps this will be of some use to you.Ben

Seems like with the command "reposition dimension text with leader" there should be additional tweaks allowed to keep leader vertical/straight but I guess that's where scripts and lisps come in.
Curious, on my toolbar it just says "reposition text" and omits "with leader". Is this just the result of using the quad or ribbon versus toolbars but it's the same command? Thanks all for the comments.

In my v14, setting the TEXT POSITION, to be ABOVE, it does that. Here is an example where i changed only that starting with the Standard dimension style. If the dimension value will fit between the extension lines, simply dragging the text outside still keeps the dimension line under the text. See attached dwg.

Thanks Joe, I noticed it too that on horizontal dimensions it's no problem. But on vertical dimensions I finally found out what I had to tweak in properties. See attached image.
What started all this is we had a customer send us their drawings (imported from Creo) and the vertical dimensions were like this. Drove me nuts trying to duplicate them until I compared the properties one by one. I hate having OCD sometimes 🤪 Now I can create a new dimension style to suit nice!
