File Size
Just downloaded 7.0.0011-1 and am still having file size questions. The same drawing in Microstation V8 is 6901KB, in Acad 2004 is 9787KB, and in Icad 22993KB. I renamed the Icad version to Icad. I open it in Acad2004, immediately save it, and the file size is reduced to 9788KB. Interestingly the Icad *.R18 file size is 9787KB. I then reopen the 9788KB file and it goes back to 22993KB, but worse the same drawing, not named Icad has it's file size increased to 21813KB. If I reopen it in Acad 2004 and immediately save it, the file size is reduced to 9787KB. If I take the file named Icad, open it in Acad 2004 the file size is reduced to 9788KB! Why is Icad more than doubling the files size?

From memory I believe there was a significant change in the Acad-2004 .dwg format - it made much smaller files. For a while the Opendwg alliance had trouble reading it, Icad now says it saves as 2004 but I'm not sure it is identical to Acad's. Who cares, compatability is all I want with Acad.I grew up with a healthy regard for resource-sapping things such as file sizes too (when a big HD was 10Mb), but in this case there is probably a reason other than corrupt or bloated files. I'm not sure what performance difference there is.

AutoCad introduced compression in the 2004 file format, comparable to ZIP compressed files. So the quantity of information stored in the 23 Mb file is exactly the same as in the 10 Mb file, but the latter is compressed.End of this year we plan to switch to using the 2004 format as the native dwg format for BricsCad.

John and Hans,Thank you so much for the replies. Now I understand what is happening. A bigger hard drive will be good insurance for me.

While 5Mb is a big file in my work (with maybe 5 weeks work in that file), filling an average HD does not seem to be on the horizon. If 20Mb is common, surely you don't do many in a week? What's in them? I had one file from an architect - a lousy section through a shop which was 45Mb, 44.9mb was the hatch pattern on a 150mm wide row of tiles half way up the wall which would have printed as a black band anyway.
