Orphan Xref

Has anybody had problems with orphaned XREF's. Am reassembling a 3D architectural model from several elements, by inserting blocks and exploding. Originally the model was a collection of XREF's but I section lines would draw through the XREF's. However one of the blocks wouldn't insert because 'it was already an XREF in the drawing'. Checking the XREF's in Drawing Explorer shows 2 unloaded XREF's which can't be deleted or purged and no sign of the problem XREF. Neither does the XREF appear as a block.

Also, why can't I purge the layers of the exploded blocks?

Am I alone with this problem.

  • Ralph,

could you please file a support request and attach a zip file with the drawings that result in the problem you describe? We will investigate what goes wrong, why it goes wrong, and try to help you out.

    Kind regards

  • I've had a similar problem - unable to rename an XREF because it says that an XREF with the same name exists but doesn't list it in the XREF dialogue. I've an idea I may have caused the problem by selecting the XREF in the drawing window and pressing 'delete' rather than detaching it in the XREF dialogue. That is a guess only - I've not had the time to test and try and replicate the error. The drawing I was having a problem with needed a lot of work doing to it anyway, so the problem ended up getting resolved by creating a new drawing and copying the drawing entities in from the old one (and re-attaching the XREFs). I appreciate that's not a practical answer for most drawings.
