Painless Update

When doing an update, how do you preserve your aliases and toolbar arrangement? I read something about loading partial *.cui files but how do you do that? Do you take your default.cui and default.* files and put them somewhere else temporarily? Please help! Thanks.

  • I keep spare copies of my custom versions of support files in a folder with my drawing files, so that they're automatically included in any back-up.

During an upgrade, I let BC overwrite the default support files, except for PGP. I use only my own custom aliases, so I keep my version of that.

After an upgrade, I don't have to do anything about CUI files. My custom CUI file remains as my "main" CUI file, and the new "default.cui" replaces the old one as a "partial" CUI file attached to it (just like an xref or an image file that's attached to a DWG file). My custom context menus are still used, since they're "main." The toolbars don't change, since there's been no change of menu file.

For LIN & PAT, all my custom code is at the end of the default file, so I just copy it from the spare and paste it into the new one.
