Strange issues

This is something that's been going on since I upgraded to V9, and I don't know if it's hardware or software related. When zooming extents in a drawing, part of a single letter in a text object is missing or appears like it's cut off. When I zoom in on it, it's fine but zoom extents and it appears "cut off" again. Regen has no effect on this and it varies in terms of location from drawing to drawing. Even stranger, sometimes it will print out fine  and others it will show up on the print. There doesn't appear to be any pattern to this.

The other issue involves object snaps. The snap "indicators" seem inconsistent meaning sometimes they show up and sometimes they don't depending on the zoom magnification. So it's like you're trying to pick an endpoint to a line and the "indicator" won't show but you're able to lock onto it anyway. Very strange. I probably should've issued a support request but it's not something I can duplicate and send them. I'm thinking it may be my video card although I'm pretty sure my drivers are up to date as well as all of the winXP support files. I'm hoping this isn't an isolated case and something else is seeing the same things. Please help.

  • Hi Tim... I've noticed the displayed character issue you describe but I have not had the problem appear in my hard copy. How do you generate your hard copy? I always print from a layout tab both directly to printer and via a PDF generating printer driver.

I would definitely recommend sending in a support request if your hard copy is affected.

  • I print from model space or tab and it hasn't been an issue with PDF's that I've noticed. I'm hesitant to send in a support request because I don't think it can be duplicated. One thing I did notice is that the character "refreshes" when panning around but when you get to a particular spot it distorts or breaks up. Mind you this isn't a whole character string just one letter. Maybe it's my crt monitor crapping out (it's over ten years old.)

At any rate I'll run some more tests to see if I can get it on hard copy again or PDF format. One thing I did try was revert to a 16 bit display mode but that did nothing. May try to adjust the video card settings and see if that helps. Thanks!

  • I don't think the display issue is related to your hardware... I experience it on two very different computers and using both LCD and CRT monitors. I don't really take notice of it much now but it does occur. I think lowercase e was one that did it a lot (I primarily use romans.shx though).

  • Yes I get the disappearing snap marker and some text distorts at larger zooms, but always corrects same as circles etc.

Haven't noticed a print problem for characters, except I usually choose "View" and lately that option masks a band off each side in print preview for A1 prints to either the HP or PDF995. So I choose "Extents" and it's fine.

For other paper sizes and the desktop printer printing seems fine. I haven't established a complete behaviour pattern so haven't entered a support request yet.

  • Yes I have observed all of the same problems. Parts of letters will disappear in both hard copy, on the screen and when printed to PDF. Snaps also seem inconsistent.

It's just hard to nail down and reproduce the problem for a support request, but worth a try anyway.

  • Snaps are a little odd at times. I've noticed a correlation between cancelling commands and/or lisp routines with ESC key and snap confusion. Sometimes the snaps stay "stuck" on even though I am not in a command at all, other times if a snap marker was displayed when the command was cancelled, repeating the command may result in that particular snap not being displayed (but seems to actually pick the correct point).

I do have a support request in for the snaps getting "stuck" (since v9.3 beta cycle) so it will likely be dealt with soon. Any other input would likely help getting it fixed right.

  • Did some experimentation on this. Noticed that when you zoom in on a text object and start panning around slowly that some of the characters flickered and distorted. This happened on one of my titleblocks with a large paragraph of notes. Now in a different drawing there is note that looks fine on screen but when printed (hardcopy) two of the characters are distorted. Outputting to a pdf file it looks fine and the hardcopy from that pdf shows no distortion. Relocating the note seems to take of the problem but why? I can't imagine what could be causing this but I'm going to send a support request with the info gathered so far. Concerning the snap issue I think Brics is already aware of it.

  • I have also seen the "modified" text issue on screen, and in print. I don't know if it is the same for everyone, but, the letter "E" seems to be the most frequent problem.
