metric units

I am evaluating Bricscad linux version and am liking what I see very much compared to other linux cad applications. The only thing stopping me loving it enough to buy it is that I don't seem to be able to set the dialogues and status bar to display measurements and coordinates in metric. Even though I've set my drawing and program drafting preferences to metric and iso it is still displaying feet and inches everywhere. Any hint as to what I have to do to change this, please?

  • Open the settings dialog, type 'LU' in the Edit field on top. The dialog should browse to the 'Linear unit type' setting. Change it to Decimal.

  • Thanks for your reply. The specific spot you wrote about to effect a change to "decimal" had no effect, but using your clue I persisted and went right through all settings and changed all instances of such settings to "decimal" and it worked. I had assumed that choosing "architectural" and then metric and iso settings would be enough. Without your clue I would not have changed away from "architectural" to "decimal". Can somone chip in and explain why the default architectural units are feet/inches? Surely there are more metric archictects in the world :-/

  • I think this is just a relic of the very early days of AutoCAD when the only market was USA.  I guess it was some US architects that first asked for dimensions to be displayed in feet and inches.  Architects in Europe have been using metric units starting in the French revolution and internationally from 1875.
