Future

Hi !

I put my vote in for preview in windows explorer. Or at least in the open dialog . Maybe a grid of thumbnails and page up/down.

Check how PDFs are handled. EXEMPLARY.

Its really useful to be able to graphically browse through drawings when looking for similar drawings.

  • That would be pretty cool!

On a similar line, it would be really nice to be able to search for specific text and mtext in multiple .dwg files.

Windows is so far behind with file searching (up to XP at least) it's no good asking Microsoft.

I am often trying to find which job I used particular equipment make and/or model number on, among 14,000 files.

  • Spot on !

Im not sure what you mean by " behind...up to XP"   W7 search I personally feel like a major step backwards. SLOW is the word for it. By the way I hope you dont keep more than 1000 files in the same directory on W7 , even browsing explorer gets unbearable.

  • I have only used up to XP. I guess there probably are not 1000 files in any directory unless you count sub-directories. Never really noticed that to be the problem except larger directories are slower to search as expected.

I use Powerdesk for exploring which offers more search options, but it's no faster.

I use Foxit for working with PDF's. That can search for text within pdf files (unless they are scanned). Speed is probably similar to Windows search considering it searches more information in fewer files, but it's so much more useful I don't mind.

Maybe PDF will one day take over the world.

  • you can use my exttools to view drawing file icons within a folder
