3D rotate with reference point ?

Hello,

i'm having troubles using this function. With 2D rotate you also have a (R)eference option and this works fine. However when choosing Base angle in 3D rotate option i can't seem to rotate objects like i want. This option for 3D rotate is not described, in fact it is also called Reference like in the 2D rotate function ?...

I would expect after defining a rotate axis that you can rotate objects also with a selected reference point in a plane perpendicular to this axis.

Any help is appreciated.

And Bricsys, 3D loft... where is it ?

  • It seems that the Base angle option for the ROTATE3D doesn't work properly. Whatever the input the command always uses 0 as the Base angle.

  • Hello,

I can't seem to be able to rotate an object to the position I wan't it to be. Even after doing everything.

  • I filed a support request for the issue Roy describes a while back. It is on the bricscad to do list.

I've had the same issue and the Wow moment (for me) had to do with understanding that the direction of rotation will always be oriented to the way you select your rotation axis. The part will always rotate clockwise relative the your view while standing at the first point defining your axis and looking toward the end point of the axis. It sounds a bit confusing, so I've attached some illustrations working through a part rotation example. I hope you find some of it helpful.

I too have not been very successful with the "reference" feature in 3D Rotate. The "constraints" feature within the Platinum version helps to eliminate many manual rotations to orient parts to other parts and is much faster (had to get a plug in for Platinum).

I found this very useful program by Konstantin Sakellaris that includes the Loft command: https://forum.bricsys.com/discussion/17053
The thread is rather long, but worth reading. The last posting shows the download for the latest program (it runs in v14 too). Good luck.
  • A very useful way to think about this is that your right hand thumb points in the rotation axis direction , and when you close your hand this is how it will rotate. If you pick two points in space then point your thumb from Point 1 to 2 . Try it

  •  Excellent suggestion! The best ideas are usually the simplest.
    Thanks
