Merge layers

Hello. I've been reading a bit, but can't find that there's a Bricscad equivalent for ACAD's laymrg. Have I missed it, or isn't it implemented yet?

  • Hi Tom,

Since you are doing a trial of GeoTools, there is a tool called GT_LAYERMAN (Layer Manager) under the Miscellaneous Tools.

It can be found as GeoTools -> Miscellaneous Tools -> Layer Names Editor.

With the GT_LAYERMAN command, you can add/remove suffix/prefix, trim/strip/ characters, merge layers , do a search and replace on names, change case and more.

This is exactly the tool you need.

  • Hi Rakesh. I've opened the GT_LAYERMAN, but I'm not sure how I merge two layers. Can you elaborate? I tried to select the two layers I want to merge, the "Merge into existing layers" box was already ticked, then I hit ok. But I still have the two layers.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tom,

It is possible to merge two layers using GT_LAYERMAN, but it is not very obvious. Select the source layer from the list. Check the options "Merge existing layers". Choose the option "Search and replace".  In the search string, enter the source layer name, and in the replace string, enter the target layer name. The source layer will get copied to the target layer and the source layer will then get purged. In effect, this becomes a layer merge operation.

I now realize the scope for improvement in the GT_LAYERMAN command. I witroduce a proper "Merge layer" command that will do this job in a more intuitive manner.

  • This worked Rakesh, *thumb up*.

Nice that you are listening in here on your users.

  • You can also merge two layers in the Drawing Explorer - Layers.

    1. Select the source layer, then right click.

A dialog displays, offering three options.

    2. Choose the CHANGE option, then select the target layer.

All entities on the source layer are moved to the target layer and the source layer is deleted.

  • Rakesh: I'm not on Facebook

Louis: Thank you for the tip!

  • Louis:

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here, but when I open Drawing Explorer - Layers and right-click on a layer, I get a context menu, not a dialog box, where I can select 'Purge', 'New', 'Rename', 'Set Current'  and so on.

Am I in the wrong window? I just click on the symbol to the left of the layer dropdown.

  • Sorry, I forgot one step, you must either first click the DELETE icon in the toolbar or choose DELETE in the context menu to get the three-option dialog.

  • Perfect. Thanks.

  • Loius,

That is indeed a nice option but it is very difficult for a first time user to guess that merge is possible using "Delete". I suggest that the right-click option include a "Merge To.." option to be able to merge it to another layer and delete the source.

  • I agree on this one. And I actually created a test layer before i dared hit delete.
