Hatching problems

Hi all I have two drawings open to the same scale (mm) I can hatch one of them but I can not get the other to hatch (or even gradient) at all. I have tried changing scales, .001,1,50,100,1000 nothing. The layer is on. The area is closed (have tried polygons and circles) I have varied the MAXHATCH  values. Nothing...... Any Ideas?

I find hatching in Bricscad a chore at the best of times seems to have random results.......... Any tips on how to improve hatching?
