OSNAP "tangent" and "perpendicular" do not seem to work with an Ellipse !

Drawing a line from a point "tangent" or  "perpendicular"  (SNAP Modi) to an Ellipse does not work !
Using a Circle, both work fine.
Any ideas or suggestions ?

  • In my V11 they work, but you have to feel along the ellipse perimeter for the snap indicator to light up. It only shows when the focus is within range unlike say a line where snaps work hitting anywhere along its path. If it saw all those arcs within the ellipse as separate entities, snap results would be very unpredictable.
  • I can confirm OP's observation on v12.2.12.

    I tested with Bricscad V11.2.4  Build 20921 !!
The same negative result... OSNAP  "tangent" and "perpendicular" don't work !!

  • Mine is 11.4.6. Most snaps don't work with ellipses not created as polylines. I believe they never did, nor in Acad.

It's a Setting, just type ellipse and you will find the option. I find the pline option generally more useful.

    you mean the variable PELLIPSE...
PELLIPSE = OFF  you get a real ellipse object ,  PELLIPSE = ON  you get a polyline
The problem reported exists for PELLIPSE = OFF !
In ACAD 2010,2011,2012 and 2013 the OSNAPS work fine !

  • Yes Pellipse is the variable. I can't remember when true ellipses offered more than quadrant and centre snaps in Icad/Bcad.

I should admit R13 was about the last time I used Acad. I have 2 blocks created from rotated ellipses (originally in Acad) to use as LH & RH isometric circles for pipe ends - they are 'Pellipses' because I believe that's the first time I came across this issue.

So for me while the snaps would be handy (as would a true centre snap for a Pellipse), it's apparently normal behaviour and that's the only solution I have found.
