CAD Networking issues

Now have multiple cad stations in our engineering dept. and was wondering how some of you do handle your networking setups. For instance, if we put our job files, blocks, standards and etc. on the central network drive what rules do you employ regarding saving on the local drive? I just don't want a mess dealing with a multitude of versions of the same file if you read me. No experience in this area so welcome any and all comments.

I have drawings, fonts, and blocks on a network drive.  I've never done anything other than tell staff to work off the network drive and to not make local copies.
