Multiple Layouts

I regularly use up to 20 layouts in a file and that's ok.

Have had up to 40, which gets unwieldy.

I currently have a job which will require at least 60, possibly 150 depending mainly on the scale used.

It's a building with 10 levels and large footprint.

I am concerned that navigating the layouts will be both slow and cumbersome - does anyone regularly do this and have a preferred strategy?

I thought of xrefing the model into a separate file for each level, but perhaps there is a better way.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

  • John,

I was architectural desktop 2004(still) for my architectural plans, the system there is a separate dwg for each floor (constructs), then use them as xrefs for various details.  Works well as a system, the model is nothing but the compilation of constructs.  Additionally each major component is also a separate drawing ie;stairways.
  • Thanks Bruce.

I regularly receive files done in a similar way, to use the background for adding mechanical services.

The xrefs are often bound. I rationalise layers, notes etc and it's helpful to do that all in one model.

Helpful to have the mech services in the same model too.

File size is normally less of an issue than navigating many layouts.

Is there a size, in Mb's, that you decide your model should be split into separate floor files before xrefing?
