Child dim style and suffix

I sometimes set the linear units for a dimension to be fractional, because for smaller measurements I would rather see 13" than 1'-1".  But, if I do that, then any angular measurements show something like 45°".  This is particularly confusing, since " means something in angular values.

I read on an Autodesk forum that a Child dimension style is what you want to use in those circumstances.  But, I cannot find that terminology in my BricsCAD v14 help file. How should I handle putting a " suffix onto inch dimensions?

  • Hi Joe,

If you've set the primary units on your dimension style to Architectural, then you don't need to include a suffix, BricsCAD will take care of it for you. Unfortunately BricsCAD doesn't support child dimension styles, I've asked before for this feature to be included. Perhaps if others asked they may look in to it :-). That said I don't think it would be a solution in your particular case.

How about making use of Alternate units? You could set the Alternate units to be fractional or Decimal, but leave off. Then in the situations you require switch it on for selected dimensions. Attach a screengrab & dwg to illustrate. In this example the primary unit is architectural, and the alternate is decimal. You'll not the angles display correctly. To get the alternate dimension below the dimension line I've set the dim suffix (DIMPOST) to \X
