fields change to text on exit

 When using fields to provide the coordinates of an object they change to plain old text when I exit the multiline text editor or table editor. Is there a system variable I need to switch? I cannot find anything in the help.

    It could be that you are confused by your FIELDDISPLAY setting. If FIELDDISPLAY is OFF fields will not have a gray background and look like normal text.

     Thanks Roy,

    But it's not he FIELDDISPLAY setting. Although I am now thinking there is something wrong with he actual drawing file as I have just done an experiment in new drawing and do not have the same problem. I have been collaborating with other drafters who use ACAD so maybe there is something is broken as a result.
