"Another installation is in progress" - Can't install version 17

 I am sure this is a simple problem for someone. I tried installing version 17 but got impatient after nothing happened for 5 minutes. I rebooted my machine and tired again and now it says "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one".

I have tried looking under control panel to see if the installation partially started - nothing.
I looked under programs folder - now partial filled directory;
I looked under user\aml\app data\Bricsys..... - nothing.

Any ideas so I can install 17?

Thx, Alan

  • Try deleting everything in your TEMP directory (usually c:\windows\temp), reboot, and delete again if there's anything else left over. Might help, might not but a left-over temp file can sometimes interfere with rerunning a process.

    Going a bit deeper, there's an answer by Gilles Poulleau over at Superuser.com which may help. It involves some registry reading to find the path to the installer which is hanging. Note that the system directory mentioned in the answer there (c:\windows\installer) is normally hidden so you may need to type it into the Windows Explorer bar to get into it. Disclaimer: I haven't tried this but it sounds reasonable.
  •  Ah, thanks - that was one directory I did not check.

    After a few minutes I managed to run the installer, but it still sat doing nothing for a very long time (an hour?) whilst I forgot and was doing other work. Periodically the installer would pop up (over the next 4 hours) with a button push question or that the installer had timed out; I kept pressing the relevant "keep going" and it eventually limped through the installation process - and seems to work!
