Closing surfaces to solidify

We need to find the best strategy to clean and "solidify" dirty 3D models. I miss a couple of features:

1) detect holes/gaps in "not closed" faceshells. These gaps prevent the stitch to create the 3d model.
2) a quick way to patch the hole (even with not planar gaps)

In this case I have a 3D engine with a missing face:

I need to close the base. Of course I can draw, make a region and stitch.

I was looking for a faster way.

I have found the:

smart selection/edge network --> extract edges --> create region (if planar) --> stitch

Is there any better way to perform this task?

Daniele
