XREF visible but not accidentally selectable ?

Is there a way to show XREFs, like an underlaying 2D plan,
but prevent them from being selectable ?

I have the Layer locked but the XREf gets selected anyway when I
try to do any 3D Entity Selections

    A workaround may be the use of the PDFs instead of DWG XREFS.
    As these are snap-able and will be selectable at their border only,
    so not disturb Selections much.

    But I have problems with PDF's accuracy.
    They seem to be in a certain predictable scale minus the print border loss.
    When trying to find a suitable scale and check by PDFs dimensions, it looks
    like I could not find a proper scale that worked for all dimensions.

    Isn't there any hidden command that will lock or block entities from
    onscreen selection ?
