attribute definition -- unable to define prompt to initiate dialog box at the edit attribute stage
i am unable to define the attribute prompt to read the area parameter of a polygon. in other words, the field dialog box cannot be accessed to select the object.

You cannot reference a field in an attribute prompt. This is only possible in an attribute value.

sorry, i meant i cannot instruct the attribute to read the entity's property eg area, perimeter, centre etc.
in autocad, in the default box you just do a right click where the user is directed to the entity that needs to be interrogated for its property.

The 'right click' solution you refer to is only possible for attributes that do not have the 'multi lines' flag set. For multi line attributes you would have to click on the '...' button and then use the 'Field' button. But it seems that fields in multi line attributes do not work properly: they are converted to text. I'll send in an SR regarding that issue.
