Export cad element as a ifc element

This is my question:

Can I import with Bricscad BIM a cad element (polyface mesh or 3D solid in a dwg file), assign it some propieties like a BIM object (a field with a external link for example) and export it as IFC format?

That is what I need with objects generated with different software (InRoad's older versions or structural elements created using "extrude" with some cad programs)

  • You can import geometry into Bricscad in some ways.
Better to have a DWG which you can just open directly.

And you can assign IFC Tags in Bricscad very easily and straightforward
so that you can finally export your content as an IFC file.
But as far as I know you can attach BIM Tags only to true Solid geometry,
    not simple Meshes or Faces.
So you will need the other Software to export DWG with Acis Solids
option or convert/rebuild Solids from former geometry in Bricscad.

Export from e.g. Vectorworks works mostly fine, although some kind
of 3D Geometry should be avoided (like Wall Objects or certain Extrudes)
as they will not come into Bricscad as Solids and need some tedious
    conversion work.
So it may need some testing to see what works best.

If you have DWGs with Solids everything is fine to "bimify"

The BIMIFY command, which scans your model and automatically recognizes and assigns Bim properties to the geometry it contains, indeed performs its magic with 3d solids.

Please be informed that using the BIMCLASSIFY command you can assign any BIM property to any type of selected graphical entities, including lines, arcs, etc...

  • Thanks Hans, good to know.

I thought I had tried to assign a non-Solid to be a IFC Wall in the past
without success. But you are totally right. I retried in V18.2 Win and
have now a Rectangle believing it would be a Wall.

So for Antonio Vico the answer is simply an All Yes.

  • Hello,

I'm working whit AX3000 on Bricscad platinum platform and Bricscad Bim plug-in and have problem with IFC exports. When i try export IFC of ventilation, exports only round cross section elements! Rectangular cross section won't exports to .IFC. Why? I try to change parameters, classify elements, bimify elements, bim propertis and much more.

What should i do to export all 3d elements and block reference to IFC format?

  • Hi Andrej,

For such a specific case, please file a support request and attach the drawing you want to export.

    Kind regards,
    Jacob
