setting Manipulator to automatically centre when you select objects

Hi whilst working in 2d I cant seem to find a preference to make the manipulator always centre, it centres on some things like if you select multiple lines or objects but not polylines or rectangles etc unless I explode them. I often want to create a rectangle and then need to copy it and centre it to other lines etc. The manipulator would make this very easy and quick if I could pick up the rectangle from the centre, having used rhino before for 2d work I used to do this all the time with the equivalent method. any Ideas anyone?
