Select similar behavior

I need to group all the facade panels in one group so to better manage them in the fbx export.
Appear that the select similar is working on panels already part of the same layer that contain only facade panels, but where they are part of a mixed layer where panels are mixed with structural elements they are both selected.
Since all the panels are in fact about 30 different types replicated in different positions, I supposed select similar was able to track when two objects does have the same shape and select them.
Any way to make this command behave in this way?

Try using Quick Select.

if u have installed the ExpressTools u can use the command 'ssx'

To leave a feedback, I finally exported the project in fbx and used 3ds Max scripting to select the various similar components
