  • Gotcha. My first Mac was a Power PC that was 95.
  • I was a little later but me 2 :) The G5 2004 . I was diehard PC dude before that.

Ok so I am downloading Witcher 3 atm because of this video ...Wow if it runs like the video this is not just a game changer it is going to be very disruptive to PC sales. BTW this is Crossover running thru Rossetta 2 running a Windows Game! Wow....Going to test Lumion after playing :) It may be a while before I get to that test :)

  • Don't stop with your tests, I listen.

  • Uhhh....Holy crap! Not only does it play Witcher 3 but it runs it like it is nothing. Doesn't even get hot....WOW....There isn't loss of frames in combat with a bunch of creatures. Cool game. Going to try Lumion 10.

  • Hmmh, Lumion on Mac, even ARM based Apple Silicon ?
Or are you talking about a Game ?

  • Lumion the 3D arch vis program. It installs and attempts to start but then these little windows pop up. I don’t know enough about what lumion needs to run and crossover. It seems like it would work if I could get past the errors.
  • BTW this is Crossover running thru Rossetta 2 running a Windows Game! Wow.

Ah, Crossover, Wine, Steam, ... got it

Very interesting that it works so well for you with Windows Games.
Then it theoretically should work for Lumion too.
I hope there are some Ambitions from Crossover support team for
RTR solutions too, not just Games, to find issues and adapt their App.
    Would be great.

  • They do have a bunch of stuff working other than games but they wait for people to submit app requests and then work on getting those apps working. I submitted a requests but who knows what that means. Probably will have to wait for Parallels to be updated to Apple silicon to try it. Crossover is a nicer solution since you are really just running the app you want and not full blown windows.

  • I once got a Crossover App with a bundle but never tried
as It thought that would not really work reasonably.
At that time I was just happy to have been successfully
switched to a 100% Mac workflow with all Apps.

  • Yea I just have Lumion left right now on the pC side. Tried Twinmotion buts its just not there yet

  • But did I get it right that since latest V20,
Bricscad won't crash anymore and you can open any,
    even large, Files ?

  • Well I work on an Intel iMac and I have been using Autocad for Mac until I switched to Bricscad but yes the latest mini update from Bricscad works great on M1. V20.2.11-1.

  • Interesting.
Vectorworks seems to run fine too, beside a few little bugs,
Modo a bit better on M1 vs Intel Big Sur.

If I only could decide which interims M1 model to buy,
that I could still make use of later, after some beefier ASi Macs
will arrive in at least a year.

Basically a stock MacBook Air, while I would prefer the Mac Mini
for now. And I don't get why any 16 GB upgrade means so much
delivery delay. Pity that there is no 10 Gb Lan option.
    And I don't like that I would need at least a 70 € USB3 to DP dongle
for my Wacom Cintiq or better a 200 € TB Docking Station.

    BTW,
also still difficult to find reasonably priced 10 Gb Switches,
that have standard LAN cables, 10 GB on all Ports, no loud
30 mm Fan and not the size of a Rack insertion.

  • Picked up a M1 Mini today and loaded up V21. So far it opens up fast enough but as soon as you try to open a drawing it crashes. I will update should anything change.
    Ed

  • V20 works but v21 doesn’t yet.
  • Good to know. Thanks.
  • Loaded up V20 today but no luck, still crashes. No worries, I'll keep using it on my Win 10 box. Maybe next year we will have a M1 (ARM) version to use.

Which version? Gotta get the latest one. 20.2.11-1 (the -1 is super important). I work on it when remote and it works perfectly fine ( well as well as V20 works...still get a bit of crazy mouse behavior)

Make sure you get rid of V21 first though! They do not coexist well together. If you install V21. V20 stops working. You have to monkey around with it to get them both to work at the same time but since V21 doesn't work yet just uninstall. Clean the application support directory then install V20 clean.

  • Thanks, I'll retry right now.

  • Hmmh....

Finally M1 Mac Mini 16 GB LPDDR RAM arrived.
Clean install of Big Sur with Update to 11.1.
Just copied some App Preferences like Bricscads V21 User Folder.
No Bricscad Settings like hidden Config !

But I can't neither open one of my Projects nor even open a blank file.
Not even in 2d Workspace .... Bricscad will just disappear from screen.
I am a little bit disappointed.
Nevertheless my Cinebench R23 results were pretty good.
(Apple Silicon native, not so exciting when running via Rosetta,
which my older Cinema R19-21 will have to do do)

V21 is broken. Gotta remove it completely and install v20. V21 doesn’t work on my intel Mac most of the time either. Also it prints really weird. Had to switch back to v20. On m1 though it’s 100% broken.
  • I thought you had V21 working on M1.

Pity no one did the amount of RAM per Project test between M1 and Intel.
So far it looks like the same Vectorworks Files on M1 via Rosetta need
3 times as much RAM as on native Intel !

Have to look into it again.

not V21 just V20. V21 wasn't out when I was testing and I didn't have a beta or I would have told them it wasn't ready to be released on M1 or on Intel.

I guess that's due to the shared RAM ? Seems like M1 will be much better when the RAM gets up to 32 gigs

  • OK, thanks.

Nevertheless both V21 and V20 are crashing/disappearing as soon as
I try to open a file. No matter if with migrated en_US/Support Folders
or when hidden and recreated from Bricscad App.

I was able to edit my Settings from V20 start screen. V21 even crashes
    when I try.

OK, Rosetta RAM usage isn't that bad as it looked.
I mixed up "Memory" on Intel vs "Physical Memory" on M1.
There is not much "Memory Pressure" on my M1 Mini and for Vectorworks,
I can run even the worst Project from a Revit import.

So now I can enjoy and be happy with my M1 Mini purchase.
Everything else, according to better single core performance, like opening
3D Apps, Files and 3D Views, the M1 Mini is noticeably snappier than my
    Trash Can.

  • Hmm dunno it was working me me on MacBook Pro m1. I made a video and everything. It’s not what I work off which is a 2017 intel iMac but I have used it when remote too. It is not 100% happy though and crashes when opening some files.

    Yes, 20.2.11-1 here too,
    but installed after V21.
Will try with next V21 release or file SR's when I find the time.

But I don't get the former god given user data manual migration over :
    User/Library/Application Support/...
    User/Library/Containers/...
    User/Library/Preferences/...
    and even
    /Library/ Application Support, if needed,
    since Big Sur anymore.

I do the torture of a clean install for M1 Mini, as my Trash Can Preferences
are full of, over the years migrated, "Trash".
Recreating years of customization and settings - endless.

I selectively copied some App's Preferences, Application Support and Container
Data over manually. But most of my Apps looked just like from scratch nevertheless.
Now you have to go to :
    /User/Library/Containers/com.App.of.choice/Data/Library/Application Support/AppOfChoice/ ...
to find Databases or user Settings in a (redundant ?) Alias-like Path way !?

  • OK, V20 mostly runs normal on a M1 Mini.
I can open my most uglies largest geometries fine
    but 3D Viewport is laggy.
    Vectorworks is noticeably faster.

I configured and installed 95% and now completely switched
over to M1 Mini. Overall I am really happy with it.

I think it is time for a V21.2. that works flawlessly on Apple Silicon
at least by Rosetta and brings the on Mac/Linux missing exporters
    and importers.

Everything else here, including very ancient Mac only Apps run
    totally modest on M1.

  • I second that!! V21.2 please and focus on a smooth running Briscad for Mac. No new features .

We just need an amazing running Briscad period with normal mouse behavior. I had to give up and go back to Autocad for a while and pay 200 bucks a month. The vanishing jittery mouse alone was driving me crazy. Also, printing was very unpredictable with Window mode. It would shift and was just embarrassing. I was getting chopped off plans and couldn't be fixed without moving it into paperspace to get it to window right. This is suppose to be used professionally but it is more like a beta that will be released in a year.

As for M1 I don't understand why V20 works but not V21. That is just weird but V21.1 is just broken period for Intel and M1.
