Modelling in 3D-BIM space. Am I doing something wrong ?

I am still struggling with modelling in "space". It's like trying to make a clay model with my hands without feeling. Am I doing something wrong ?

Ultimate modeling freedom comes with a price :: I do not expect adaptive components but elements like walls have no offset from base level (Z-base or floor level) or could be adjusted in the properties unless it's a block. Yes you can move 'n pull but that is not the same as exact positioning. and "connect to nearest" is also most of the time not an option.
Pipeline this moment is first a draft in 2D and then 'tracing' in 3D.

and I am seeking for a handy tool for quickly checking thickness, height and/or materials of walls (now every time measuring or searching in the properties panel).

Things that, as i recall, went more easily with that "industry standard" fancy BIM program (but having some other for me major restrictions/flaws)

How do you manage this kind of growing pains ?!
