Preview of dwg files in Windows File Explorer

About a year ago the preview images of dwg files stopped displaying. It has been very frustrating and long searches on internet forums did not provide an answer.

I have just discovered what was wrong. The Windows 10/11 setting for 'Show desktop when moving cursor to end of taskbar' had been turned off unintentionally. Turning on this 'Peek' setting (Settings/Personalisation/Taskbar) allows Windows preview handler to correctly display a preview of dwg files. I am posting this in case someone else finds it useful.

  • Good to know. (Good find)
I usually have 'Show desktop when moving cursor to end of taskbar' activated.

On the other hand, I work on Mac.

We never ever had Finder Preview for DWG unfortunately.
I think I already filed a Service Request many years ago.

    Even Blender has File Preview.

  • What may help on Windows is to install Autodesk DWG Trueview, in the past it would cause Windows to show dwg previews even if no full DWG cad program was installed.
