Trouble installing Express Tools: Now BricsCAD won't open

I recently attempted to install the Express tools in my recent re-installation of V16, and now BricsCAD won't open; It starts to open, then crashes. I tried to follow the instructions in the pdf, "Install Notes Express Tools for Bricscad V16" the best I could tell (the example images were in German), but after the failure, went to look for other possible answers…

I found the "read me" text file, which had the exact same procedure, but with the added statement: "If you are running an different language than German, you need to copy the file 'Runtime.Res.dll' from the OpenDCL Dictionar [Your Language] into the Express folder where the file 'OpenDCL.16.brx' is located".

Not 100% sure what that even meant, I went searching for such files/folders. I found a folder called "OpenDCL", and inside are folders: CHS, DEU, ENU, ESM, FRA, RUS

Wouldn't English be ENG, or is it ENU? I don't want to make more assumptions and make matters worse… I didn't have this problem in my original installation, so I'm not sure what I did differently… and I can't open BricsCAD to remove the EXPRESS path from the support path!

Please help, I have a lot of work to do and need CAD back ASAP!

  • You can run the standalone BricsCAD Profile Manager to create a new default user profile, then make the new user profile current. That should help you get BricsCAD started.

  • I'm not even sure what that means, but I guess that's my only option, aside from re-installing Brics. Where do I find this Profile Manager?

I still had access to the hard drive with my previous working installation including Express Tools, so I copied and replaced everything in Program Files and Appdata, hoping that it might replace a file that was clashing at startup, but it still opens and immediately closes.

I found "profilemanager_app.exe" in Program Files and got in by using an older profile, then tried to install Express tools again and had the same problem; open/crash.

Each time I try to install Express tools on another profile, it contaminates the profile, making it unusable.

So, after redoing the Express installation process on new profiles, and having the same problem with each, I unistalled BricsCAD from the machine, then reinstalled (without Express Tools). I copied all of the program files from the other working version, then I opened the newly installed BricsCAD, and it crashed…

Also, when I open profile manager, the profiles that I created before the re-installation are still present, and are contaminated, and replacing with the arg files from my other working installation doesn't fix it…

So, there must be something in the registry that wasn't reset with the un-installation/re-installation, and when I create a new profile, then add Express tools to the support path in settings, the profile becomes unusable.

There has to be a fix for this… Why will it work on one installation, and not the other? How can I delete the contaminated profiles on the new machine, so that I can successfully import the ones from the old one?

Also… when I un-install BricsCAD and delete all folders/files related to Bricsys in Program files and AppData, then re-install BricsCAD, all of the profiles I've created still show in Profile Manager… so they are not being deleted with the un-install. A windows search of drive C for *.arg finds nothing… where are the profile/arg files kept?

  • User profiles are stored in the system registry. You can use Profile Manager to delete them. Note that uninstalling BricsCAD only uninstalls application files; it does not remove your user support files or registry keys.
