Crash when using Communicator to import STEP file V26

Recently upgraded to v26 and now when I try to open STEP files, BricsCAD opens with a green bar at the bottom that says "Importing Product Structure". The green bar fills up in the time it would take to open a STEP file in v25, but the application hangs right after that. I have to kill it with the process manager.

I'm getting the same behavior on two different computers- my desktop, and my laptop. Support says they aren't having the problem. There is no way for me to use Communicator since "upgrading" to v26.

I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling both CAD and Communicator but no dice. If I go back to v25, everything works again. Does anybody have ideas on how I can solve this? Deleting registry keys? Anything?

  • I can import STEP files in BricsCAD V26.1.07 using Communicator V26.1.05. Do you use a proper Communicator version?

    I'd try the clean install:

    • Uninstall the current version of BricsCAD
    • Delete Program files BricsCAD folder "C:\Program Files\Bricsys\BricsCAD V26 en_US"
    • Delete the folder "C:\Users\[**username**]\AppData\Roaming\Bricsys"
    • Delete the folder "C:\Users\[**username**]\AppData\Local\Bricsys"
    • Delete the registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bricsys\BricsCAD\V26x64\en_US
    • Reinstall BricsCAD

  • I did the registry work. Thousands of keys deleted. Same issue after the fact with a fresh installation.

I realized after the fact that if I'm already in BricsCAD and choose to "Import" through the BricsCAD menu, the STEP file will be imported instantly. This has something to do with how files are being opened by Windows.

I'd still like a solution on this. Hoping support can chime in or someone else may have info.

Thank you for your advice Lyubov.

  • Update. By turning on BACKGROUND IMPORT in the Communicator settings I was able to get it working. Its not a simple file open operation, I have to click a link after bricscad opens but its working.

Odd behavior but I think I can live with it.
