Future Build Request

I use Bricscad 6 and used AutoCad 2004 prior to retiring from a municipality in August 2004. I am expanding my Design Services exclusively into 3D Modelling and then rendering in 3D Studio Viz, Bryce and WorldBuilder. After thorough research and use experience, I've discovered that exporting a file as a ".dxf" is totally useless in the rendering programs after translation. (even very basic drawings don't translate properly) Will the Bricscad developers look into adding the formulas for exporting drawing files (.dwg) into the ".3ds" format? this is the only lifeline for bringing cad drawings into graphic rendering programs short of re-drawing the entire wireframe 2D/3D file.Thanks.

  • Unfortunately there is little chance BricsCad will work on creating translators from dwg/dxf to other formats any time soon: for now we want to stay focussed on improving the core cad functionalities.

  • I fullly agree, you don't have to add new stuff. Actually, you only need to make 3dconvert work properly. Once you've mastered that, and people become also aware of the possibilities of, for instance, Blender3D (an open source software), Bricscad will become much more attractive to a lot of architects and designers.

  • I disagree that 3D is not a basic CAD feature, 10 years ago it will be ok for CAD to work just in 2D. I use a lot 3D drawing for problem solving and design, not just for presentations. If 3D is not your main concern now, please provide at least a working 3D DWG drawings in other programs. I tried to open some 3D made in Bricscad in Autocad and do some renderings in Accurender, the program often crashes. Besides that, I don't know why, 3D drawings made in Bricscad are larger than the ones made in Autocad 2000.

  • Exporting to a .3ds format from a CAD drawing is a critical function for utilizing .dwg files in a modeling/rendering Program. If "DXF" translation worked, I would not have an issue. The problem is that there is currently no way to use a .dwg file in Autodesk Viz, Sketch-Up, Bryce 5 and World Builder Pro from BricsCAD short of re-drawing the entire model in the native modelling/rendering Program. Even TurboCAD is now featuring export to .3ds. BricsCAD "Render and Quick Rendering" are completely useless for even the most basic material, lighting and shadow applications of 3D site drawings in BricsCAD; this has not been an issue for me up until now because BricsCAD is an excellent Program for it's primary functions. How do I get a BricsCAd drawing over into a modelling Program?

  • I use Artlantis R, which is an excellent modeller. It will open .dwg files without problems, subject to a few minor irritations to do with multi-ply materials (subject of another thread elsewhere!).Phil BYork, UK

  • Perhaps Modelpress Publisher will do the trick, it converts DWG to 3DS.http://www.modelpress.com/publisher.htm

  • To L Vander Zee,I listed a simple 3d Bricscad drawing (.dwg) under File Secifications to the add column of ModelPress Publisher and then accessed the Publish Options, clicked the Publish option and the Program would not convert the drawing to a .3ds file..........

  • you have to save your drawing as a Autocad 2000(dwg) file in Bricscad, this works for me.I send a converted file to your E-mail adress

  • I saved a basic residential 3-D BricsCAD drawing file (dwg) in AutoCAD 2000 format and ModelPress would not convert the drawing to a .3ds file. I also found that your proto converted .3ds file from ModelPress would not open in Autodesk Viz, Bryce and World Builder. This is a continuous process of "hitting the wall" I've been experiencing for 2 years trying to bring over CAD drawings into modeling programs and rendering them to a Presentation mode.

  • to me, the key issue here seems to be:A proper 3DS, or DXF export feature (that includes ACIS solids).

  • It would seem that any 3D modeling program should import .dwg files and it should not be expected that Bricscad should create a bunch of translators. That said, Bricscad files should be able to be translated by 3D applications that translate .dwg files seamlessly. I have a feeling that "TRUE DWG" may have more nooks and cranies than they expected because I receive numerous flags when bringing .dwg files back to Acad. Tell us please if this experiment of compatibility is going to continue and at what time frame you expect to achieve as much usabillity as Bricscad V7.Jerry
