Block/layer bug?

After block insertion:Turning off or freezing either the layer it was inserted into, OR the layer the block was originally created in, will stop the block displaying. The block is correctly listed in properties as being in the layer in which it was inserted. The block will only display in the colour in which it was created. The particular insertion colour requested is properly listed in Properties (which does not correspond to the displayed colour, of course).Anyone else had any block related problems?Miles

  • I believe the behaviour is the same as Autocad's. Blocks with varying coloured contents would be very confused if the blocks' colour could be dictated.I regularly use blocks with multiple layered contents, insert them on layer 0. Freezing and thawing certain layers shows different parts of the block then I can use the same drawing in different contexts. In this case I use air conditioning layout drawings as builder's work drawings.

  • Thanks for the reply John.I haven't used blocks much, so far. The colour point is clear, now ;-)I'm still having difficulty understanding why turning off the layer that the block was created from, removes it from the layer that it was inserted into... particularly as it's not a consistant effect. • Say you inserted a whole other drawing, with all its various layers, as a block. It is impossible to say what layer the block was created on and it refers to its insertion layer for its overall visibility state, freeze that and you freeze the whole block. You can freeze or thaw layers inside the block as if you were looking at the original, as long as you leave the insertion layer alone. It is very often best to insert blocks on layer 0. However if they are simple and you want the whole block to adopt the behaviour of a layer, create it on layer 0 and insert onto that other layer - they adopt the properties and visibility of that layer.
