V8 beta

I'm surprised there has been so little comment here about the beta release.Must have involved a great deal of work. Well done Bricsys. It's cetainly a lot prettier - and that's not a criticism BTW.Generally working well, though some commands seem to act slightly differently to V7 but that may be the way I've set variables - probably should have started with my own default drawing rather than the new one that came with v8.I've managed to create a drawing with some entities I can't select anymore with the mouse but ^A works OK. Pasting into a new drawing works, but still can't select them. All fine in V7

Comments

  • We would be glad to investigate what went wrong with these entities. Could you please file a support request and attach the drawing to it?If you happen to remember how these entities were created that would also be very useful information. Thanks for your appreciated feedback.Hans De BackerBricscad Development

  • I've found the problem. These particular entities have a Z value of -0.000. I can pick and alter these in V7 but not V8. After changing to 0 in V7 all OK again in V8.It was the result of a MOVE but this only affected some 5 or 6 out of 150 entities.Should I still submit support request?

  • Yes, we'd liked to investigate the dwg to see why the entities cannot be selected in V8 (just modifying some entities to have a small negative Z value does not seem enough to make the problem occur). Thanks for helping us to make V8 a better product.

  • OK, submitted. Thanks for the prompt replies.

  • I'm not sure how new that is - in V7 Trim always works first time, but often fails to select anything on a subsequent trim command, specially if it is a multiple select. With a drawing open in a second window, selecting multiple entities in either window (for any command) often fails.

  • "I'm surprised there has been so little comment here about the beta release."I'm an architect and June is a month very busy for me. A lot of worksto finish. I imagine it's similar for others. I will have a look especially in July or Augustus.

  • I too am very busy now, but V8 looks good...one thing I noticed and can't figure out.How do I set the mouse scroll button to set snaps. I'm still using v6 in which if I set MBUTTONPAN to OFF, by default the scroll button then controls entity snaps. Alas, in V8 this is not the case....any way to set this?

  • "How do I set the mouse scroll button to set snaps".We are also having trouble with entity snap controls. In V7 F3 key would togle entsnap. In V8 it doesn't work. I think it's a bug. If you go to custimize keyboard and scroll down to F3 you get an error message popup.Does someone know a workaround?

  • Customizing the action when pressing the mouse scroll button, is not yet possible in V8.About F3 : this is indeed a bug, thanks for reporting. In the user interface customization file (default.cui), the 'esnap_t' MenuMacro is missing. It will be added in the next beta. If you want, you can edit default.cui (normally located in c:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Bricsys\Bricscad\V8\en_US\Support) in a text editor and add this xml element : Toggle ESnap '_esnap;_T Toggle Entity Snap Setting

  • Sorry, I'll try again to write the xml tags (they were skipped in the html formatting) :<MenuMacro UID="esnap_t"> <Macro> <Name>Toggle ESnap</Name> <Command>'_esnap;_T</Command> <HelpString>Toggle Entity Snap Setting</HelpString> </Macro></MenuMacro>

  • Thank you, solved!p.s. When opening the default.cui file in notepad it is utterly unreadable. When opening it in firefox you can click view source, copy all and paste in notepad. Then it is also editable (and you can see what you are doing). Could you guy's save this file in a way so we users can also can read what's in there?

  • The goal of saving files in XML format (like the .cui file) is precisely to allow everyone to 'see what they are doing', without requiring additional documentation or help files, at least, if the names of the xml tags are well chosen... By the way, the names of the tags were chosen by Autodesk, we support reading and writing to this format, but didn't create it.If you already opened the file in FireFox, you might as well also use FireFox to edit the file. One of the options in the View menu allows to view and edit the source of a page.A user friendly editor for .cui files is in the works: it is the Customize dialog, which will allow to Edit and Save menu/toolbar/keyboard configurations back to a .cui file. This is scheduled for the coming months.

  • Great to hear that there will be an editor. I hoped it would be included in one of the next releases. Thanks for the explanation.

  • Not overly significant, but annoying just the same....Keeping in mind that I am still using v6, I have noticed that F8 no longer toggles ORTHO, but instead toggles SNAP. Likewise, F9 now seems to toggle ORTHO and not SNAP. Recommendation: Change them back to the way they were please. Also, since installing V8 beta 8.0.8 I have lost my license for V6. If I reinstall my V6 license, I can't run V8.One more thing........Is there a way too set the default save format back to 2004? I'm not too popular now, because I keep forgetting to SAVE AS 2004 every time I save, so no one else in the office can open the files I have worked on until I resave.

  • The settings dialog allows to control the save format. The value is still a number however which is not very informative. It will be replaced by a combo for the release. F8 does set ortho. You can check this in the default.cui in your documents and settings.kind regards,Alexander Van Heuverzwyn,Bricsys

  • Meanwhile, to get you through this week:The default save format is called "save format" in the settings dialog and it's under "Program Options". The value for saving to dwg2004 is '4'. Dwg2007 is 1, Dwg2000 is 7. We're also modifying the licensing mechanism so a version 8 trial can coexist with a version 6 or 7 pro or classic.regards,Alexander Van Heuverzwyn

  • Hans,Thank you for the information. Within the default.cui F8 is listed as associated with ORTHO, but while using V8 F8 most definitely toggles SNAP. Everything works correctly in V6. Could there be something overriding the default.cui when I run V8? At first I thought that maybe my keyboard had gone haywire, but I have tried multiple keyboards, and combined with V6 working correctly, I have determined that something else is amiss. Thanks again.

  • While I am grateful to Hans for the info he posts, I meant to say thank you to Alexander for the info re: save format, etc. Oops.

  • I am also experiencing problems with page setup and printing. I can no longer snap to the guides we have set up with our xrefed border and title blocks. When I try to snap to these guides the snap aperture box shows up in random spots. Also the background "image" of the paper size has a habit of moving here and there when I zoom in an out, pan, etc. Also, suddenly I cannot open some DWGs from out of house. I get an error message that says "INVALID INDEX". These DWGS still open fine in V6. I was able to open these ok in V8 with the beta 8.0.6 I believe.

  • If a problem occurs during rendering the drawing, the display remains empty and an error dialog is show. Please try recovering the drawing. If that doesn't help, could you send us the drawing for analysis?kind regards,Alexander Van Heuverzwyn,Bricsys

  • Recovering the dwgs seems to have done the trick, thanks.Still having problems getting page setup right. Is there a problem with snapping to an entity within an xref that is xrefd into paper space? Thank you

  • Steven, printing scale changes are indeed being applied a bit late(only after the first scrollzoom/pan) when selecting the viewing area for printing. After the first viewing operation the background remains constant so it's only at the start. Can you confirm this behaviour?Could you send us the drawing you're having flyover snap problems with ?kind regards,Alexander Van Heuverzwyn,Bricsys

  • I would be happy to forward the dwg...what is the procedure for this? I have verified that this condition only applies when my snap guides are xrefed into paperspace. If I physically place the snap guides into paperspace, the flyover snaps work. Also, I have been noticing the no matter what I try, my viewport layer prints. I can turn the layer off, set it to not print, freeze it, but it still prints. Also, I have been having difficulty with my plot styles. Everything comes out the same line weight. I have double checked the ctb, etc. and verified that all relative settings are set to what works in V6, but to no avail.

  • Steven, could you make a support request for this? That's over here:http://www.bricscad.com/myaccount/supportRequests.jspthanks in advance,Alexander Van Heuverzwyn

  • Where have the crosshairs gone in V8? Have I missed something or do they only show during commands now? Crosshairs (which showed always) were one of the nice improvements from the original Icad98.

  • Options [Program options] [Dsiplay] [Always use crosshair]: when checking the option 'Pointer defaults to crosshairs' the crosshairs should indeedalways display (irrespective of whether or not a command isactive). This seems to be broken in V8. Thanks for pointing it out. We will investigatethis.

  • I've set crosshair size at 100% and "always use crosshairs - pointer defaults to crosshairs" set.In V07 it was OK, in 8.0.8 build 8153 BETA(running on Windows XP Home)the crosshairs flash and arevisibly dragged behind as i move the cursor. In addition there are occasional pauses of up to half a second when entering commands.

  • When's the release? The Beta looks good! I know it's probably too early to be impatient. :)
