XREF ESNAP (awlays snapping to insertpoint)

I thought that objects in an XREF behaved more or less  like ordinary objects, in terms of ESNAP. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Suddenly my cursor snaps to a XREF insertpoint miles away from where I am currently working in the drawing. Very annoying. Is this behaviour controlled by a switch? I would love to get my old ESNAP behaviour back.
