Manipulator alignment - how to get it square to the XYZ

If one has an object on some angle, starting up the manipulator causes it to pick a point and then aligns itself with an edge at that angle away from the true XYZ.

How does one tell the manipulator to reposition itself at the point using the coordinate system so things can be move in the 3 cardinal directions and not at the angle the object happens to be at?
