Background mask not working in master model

We have a model containing hundreds of multileaders, all linking to attributed blocks. The model has existed for months and been fine, but for some reason the background mask now doesn't want to work and everything is showing through each other.
Draworder makes no difference, and we can't see things clearly - to be honest, draworder makes no difference, it doesn't even work on xrefs.
If I copy the multileaders to a shiny new model, the background mask works, but I can't see a difference when I compare.
I asked AI, but to no avail. Can anyone advise?

    Hello, I'd check the Visual style and set if to 2dWireframe: when nothing is selected, open Properties panel and find the Visual style under View category.
