Forced Update to Windows 11
A few days ago, received a mail from the team of Octave/BricsCad, basically saying that if I want to keep Bricscad updated I'm forced to update W10 to W11 because they won't support W10 anymore. I find these a bit aggravating since Microsoft itself has, rather quietly, extended the support for W10 for one more year from October 2026 to October 2027. I do not feel comfortably updating my current OS to a worst one.

I agree. W10 LTSC is not end of life yet. For me its not that W11 is bad in itself, but I will not risk a my existing PC setup trying an in-place upgrade to W11. That means starting over on new hardware and reinstalling and re-configuring all the apps I use. That's a considerable expense in both time and money that's hard to justify.

Wasn’t that big of a deal for me, I upgraded my old 9900k to windows 11, no issues. It even kept my Win10 layout. You can’t blame BricsCAD since “The change came without any actual announcement”. They probably already upgraded themselves, new development tools and stuff.

I'm not blaming anyone, just saying is annoying, was not expecting to be forced turn my PC into a surveillance machine because I need CAD to work. Also, think they are shooting themselves in the foot, since they want us to pay for maintenance (us who bought a perpetual license) but what if we do not want use W11, there is not point to pay for the annual maintenance fee.

It is not so easy. There may be a lot of different reasons why someone doesn’t want to upgrade system to win 11. Forcing clients change system so quickly is not fair. In my opinion, win 10 should be supported at least a few years longer.

An option could be to a legal copy of Windows 11 Pro for around 12 Us on stacksocial and install that in a virtual machine and run V27 in that virtual machine. It will probably be somewhat slower than installing directly on the pc but depending on what you are using BricsCAD for (2D, 3D, BIM etc.) it may or may not be an option.
For general 2D drafting it might work well enough, for complex large drawings it may not be an option.

I'd like for them to explain what "no longer supported" actually means. "Will not install" is much different from "we won't help if you have a problem if you are running W10". So far as I can tell W11 is W10 with slightly different trade dress and with more telemetry.
It may not matter for me. I still use V24 for production. V25 is too unstable to use. V26 is better than V25, but I overrun the input queue and get lost in a mode where all I can do on the screen is make continuously variable blue or green selection boxes that can't be ended because the system will not accept a click to set the box size.
[I run an AutoHotKey script to make toolbar buttons select on mouse button press instead of on mouse button release (like Owen's QuikPik). There could have been a change in V26 that breaks the AHK script. I have more work than I can get to so I haven't had time or motivation to investigate.]
Too early to tell whether V27 will be usable.

It will probably install on Windows 10 but there will be no support in case you have problems in combination with Windows 10. This with the caveat that if V27 uses something that is only supported in W11 and not in W10 and there is no workaround for that, then it may not work well for your needs or not work at all.
If you are on maintenance you will get a copy of V27, just try to install it and see if there are issues. Windows 11 is not worse than Windows 10 other than Microsoft messing up things with a bad update, but that applies to WIndows 10 as well.
