HP ZBook G1i: Core Ultra 9/64GB vs Core Ultra 7/16GB, which is the better pick ?

Trying to decide between two HP ZBook G1i Mobile Workstation configs from Techyest :

  • Core Ultra 9 285H, 64GB RAM, 1TB storage
  • Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage

What would actually make a difference day to day; does the 285H’s extra cores matter much for general workstation tasks, or is the RAM jump from 16GB to 64GB the bigger factor? Trying to figure out if the higher spec is worth the extra cost or if the base config is enough.

  • Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB RAM, 512GB drive is enough for light work. I’m at 9GB with a drawing, a browser tab and word opened. ideally more ram would be better, the OS will cache stuff with more ram, making it feel snappier

  • Intel says the same number of cores and the more expensive's Max turbo frequency (so single core performace) of 5.4 GHz isn't noticeably faster than the cheaper's 5.1 GHz. So I don't think it is worth the 285H.

I would not want a PC with less than 64 GB RAM or less than 1 TB SSD nowadays though.
(Ok, currently we still have RAMageddon and SSDapocalypse)

  • If you can afford the extra cost the 64 GB RAM and the 1 TB SSD laptop is the better option. For BricsCAD the extra cores don't make that much difference. For other software the extra cores might be useful to have if you have software that you use often and can fully take advantage of (all) multiple cores.

  • Hi.

    1. about the processors: for bricscad usages there isn't much differences between the tow.
    2. RAM: from my experience 16GB is not enough - 32GB is the sweet point for most users.
    3. 512GB SSD also to my opinion is not enough - 1TB or more.

if the Core Ultra 7 255H, 16GB RAM, 512GB RAM is upgradble and the added cost for that upgrade worth it you can do it.

    about the SSD:

there is always the option of working with external SSD, but this will slow down the work.

in order to keep the full preformance you will need to copy the file you are working on to the laptop SSD and that will be annoying.

    to sum up:

in my opinion don't go for less then 32GB of RAM.

512GB SSD can be used with some issues.
