We are doing consumer electronics in China and you can not imagine how much more administration trouble is Windows here, due to constant virus, trojans, spyware...Our Linux boxes make no trouble at all and most needed software is included already. The effective cost difference is pretty big.Briscad would quickly replace our Autocad as soon as a native Linux version is available.

dear mr Erik De Keyser, thanks for your kind report on the linux version of your product.I sincerely hope development can go as expeected and you can offer us as promised a linux bricscad as soon as possible.we are a young architecture practice based in northern italy, and we completed a total switch to a linux based framework 5 years ago. since then we're forced to use a emulated environment just to run our cad applications, and, actually, we're kind of tired of that kind of solution, therefore we're really interested on any development that can bring good news in linux cad field, and we're surely willing to evaluate your native-linux product when available. (and probably buying more or less 10 licenses)best regards

A New Year, and perhaps you can shed some light on the progress, if any, that has been made on the linux version. Not trying to push as much as I would like to get a progress report of some sort.

I have purchased intellicad for linux that requires to run under wine but have had little success using it.Will there be a special upgrade cost for customers such as myself?

Have a nice day.My case is similar to yours, people. I'm just waiting the release of Bricscad's Linux native version to buy it. Autocad and its clons run on windows, but every day more and more people migrate to linux. And we know that migration will increase as soon as bricscad's linux native version is available; not only particular users, but enterprise users.Just a couple of questions:* Do you have an estimated date for the release (or the Release candidate) ??* What's the approximate cost ??Forgive our restlessness, we are anxious for that the product goes out to the sale. Thanks, bricsys, cause you're giving us an alternative.

Erik, you have given some god news to the Architecturals people, how about the lonely Linux people . The Linux community is growing a a rapid pace, finish true linux version, and create a name for yourselfs.

Here is the update:We have some delay in the rewrite, but not dramatically. I hoped we could finish it end of 2008 (ref. #23), but it will be closer to end of March or mid April. Removing all MFC classes is really a huge task.As promised the native LINUX version is then our next big thing and the majority of our CAD team will be involved. We expect some serious research will be needed in the area of printing and plotting, which makes it difficult to estimate. Within 6 to 8 weeks - when we tackle the native LINUX version on full power we will get a better look at it, bit by bit.I have no problem to update you all from time to time along that process and when impatience gets untenable you may remind me. But do not doubt - we stay committed.erik

Thanks for this update Erik!Alltough i won't need a cad program for linux anymore, for me it is more than that, it will be a victory for the linux operating system to have such a goog cad program. Therefore i will keep enthusiastic for this, and will even be helping with betatesting if necessary. Will there be any advantages for people who bought bricscad 6 for linux, wich realistic, was not a very usable product? Will there be beta tests for people who allready have a license?

We are a growing consulting firm and have several desks we would port to Linux as soon as we can get a decent cad application for it. We already use bricscad for windows but would love the chance to drop the Windows boxes. Any new desks will almost certainly be linux when Bricscad ports.Linux support for multiple monitors is pretty woeful. We use multiple screens on every desk and we are not alone. Given the cost of the mainstream Windows products, however, it would be cost effective to run on dedicated (approved as suitable by bricscad) hardware and linux distributions with multi-monitor support. Just a thought.Happy to beta test if you need someone.. We have lots of in-house customisations, lisp and toolbars that will probably test it out. All our stuff is 2d.When this comes out all we will need is a decent book keeping package.I am not sure what the issues with printing and plotting are (out of ignorance) but, as a stop gap solution it would certainly be acceptable to us to use PDF output as an intirim solution and plot or print those PDFs.Please keep us in the loop.

"LINUX version is then our next big thing"..."6 to 8 weeks - when we tackle the native LINUX version on full power we will get a better look at it"Not sure what the others think of this but it sounds like were looking well into another year here! You'll notice the start date of this post was July 2007.....Don't hold your breath folks. The current wine version just doesn't cut it as a "linux" release! If you're into 3d look to Varicad. Meanwhile, if we want "Acad" functionality we'll all continue to harbour a MS machine! Seems as if the proverbial carrot is getting smaller and smaller.

Bricsys efforts are very, very interesting... On the other side, many people think that CAD on Linux won't be a good business. The slow progresses in that direction mean something...(We) Linux users are a small group, many people in this group has a good computer knowledge, but many are not very ready to pay a licence. So, I understand the strain and the loneliness of Bricsys. However, I think the work is worthy. Is it possible, to launch a subscription? I am ready to prepay a part of my Linux-Bricscad licence to help the development. What do the other forum users think?

I agree with Roberto, me too I would agree to pre-pay a part of the license cost if this could help in the development (at last) of a decently fetured CAD system on linux usable in architectural design domain.
0 -
I would also pre-pay part of the sub fee, as long as some sort of schedule was set in place. I do not want the promise of something in the near without some sort of time line attached.Bricscad has been rather slow in the development thus far, Two years with only a few updates, and those because they have been pushed to respond.
0 -
Dear Bricscad! Please say an approximate date when the beta-version will be issued? We all really need something like interim result.
0 -
Yes Erik It is update time, what are the companies plans. Some of us have offered to give a partial sub fee just to prove to Bricscad we are interested. Please let us know the current status of the project, a definative time line, and if there is anything we, as users, can help with.If the task at hand is proving to be to daunting, let us know that as well. It is better to be informed that the project will not go forward, instead of keeping our hopes live

Write Cad software is very difficult, and take lots of time. Not an easy job.Im waiting to buy a license and can test in ubuntu.

+1 to information update request. Even if you could release a very alpha version, which hangs occassionally and needs severe bugtesting, I and probably everybody else would be glad to help testing.

Bricsys team: Thanks a lot for the efforts towards an up-to-date native Linux release. I'm not really a programmer but let me suggest using .NET instead of MFC, I think with the MONO project in Linux it could be ported with only a few minor modifications. Also please check some open source projects that already have printing and plotting capabilities so you can speed it up, but as another poster said, for now printing (exporting) to PDF will do just fine. I'm also ready to buy my Bricscad license for Linux!

OK, here is the update,We still are working on the rewrite. Planned to be finished end of April and then one month full blown testing. As said the rewrite contains a lot of stuff that is needed for our native LINUX version. As such we are continuously working on the LINUX code already. We seem to have a breakthrough for the printing problems and that's for us very, very good news. I appreciate a lot all offerings for prepaying a license or sponsoring the development. That's really great. But luckily I can confirm that Bricsys is in very good financial shape so this is not a matter of funding. It is a matter of hard development work. You will understand that I get a bit afraid of putting a date on the release. The most pessimistic planning internally assures there will be a beta in Q4. Of course you all will have access to it. Suppose all goes well without any difficulty then a real release before the year end might belong to the possibilities too. But that is still open.Important to know: WE ARE COMMITTED - WORKING ON IT - AND WILL DELIVER. There is no change in our priorities: after the rewrite the LINUX project is our main project. That is decided and won't change. We all here at Bricsys would have loved to release earlier. For now we shut up very modestly and continue the hard work.Best, erik

Thanks for the update!Good work to the entire staff!

For me a decent CAD on Linux will be a dream... I hope it will be realized!

Following Roberto's idea, I am absolutely ready too to pre-pay a Linux license to support Erik and his team.Think about it, Erik....Thank you for your committment, however

Any news about the release of the new version? Thanks.

What's about bricscad for linux? All we need is cad.

impatiency is growing fast....sorry if I bother you again, Linux Bricscad developing team, but we're now in June and no news come out from you...Latest Erik's update talked about finishing by april and then a full month of testing. I hope everything run ok! Can we have a new update? You know, shifting in and out Linux isn't that nice, especially to go in and out ... Vista! Argh!
